It is with much regret and sadness that I have to inform you that club chairman Eric Chapman passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly while enjoying another of his passions, plane spotting while overseas on Friday 02/08/19, the friend he was with tried to resuscitate him using CPR. Due to the sudden nature of his death he is due to have an autopsy.
He leaves a son, daughter, a young grandson and a grandchild due to be born on his return and I'm sure you will join me in passing our sincerest condolences to them and the wider family.
Eric was not just a long standing personal friend but also co-founder of Totteridge FC along with myself in 1996 with his son Michael joining my own son Paul becoming some of the first players to join the club. He has been chairman since 1997 and Club Welfare Officer since the position was introduced by the FA, he was very much a part of the history, structure, culture and integrity of the club, he worked tirelessly and selflessly to keep the club on a good financial standing, promote excellent values and ensure the club operated within the FA regulations regarding child welfare - he will be greatly missed by all around the club.
On a more personal level, he showed an immense concern and compassion over my own health scare over the past 2 or 3 years and was a driving force in insisting I put my health before the club, even delaying his own retirement to protect the club and allow for me to step down first. I am eternally grateful to him for all his help and advice over the years and making my retirement that much easier.
His love for football extended beyond Totteridge FC where he was a season ticket holder at Wycombe Wanderers for many years and could be found on the terrace behind the goal, on many occasions we have held an impromptu meeting prior to the match to discuss some club business and likewise, the Wanderers inevitably found their way onto the club meeting agenda!
This does leave the club with a few immediate problems:
- CWO - Simon Kearey has agreed to notify the county association and take over Eric's duties with immediate effect.
- Chairman - We will need to elect a new chairperson.
- Equipment - Eric is holding all the Hazlemere Fete equipment (gazebo, BBQ etc.), we can arrange and collect any time but this will require storage going forward.
I am in touch with Karen, Eric's daughter and have offered the club's condolences, help and support in anyway we can. I hope the club might honour the many years of dedication Eric has given to this local community service.
The club has set up a charity page in the memory of Eric Chapman to raise money for Myeloma UK.
This is a charity close to Eric following the passing of his wife in 2015 who suffered from this form of cancer and is chosen by his family, please do feel free to support this worthy cause by donating however small or large to the link below. Thank-you.
